Catching Summer Whiting at Bribie Island!
A Complete Guide
Bribie Island, located just north of Brisbane, is a fishing paradise known for its abundant marine life. Among its prized catches is the Summer Whiting, a popular target for both seasoned anglers and beginners. If you’re planning to fish for these delicious and feisty creatures during the warmer months, here’s everything you need to know.
Why Summer Whiting?
Summer Whiting, also known as sand whiting, are sought after for their delicate, sweet flavour and their fun-to-catch nature. These fish tend to be more active during the warmer months, making Bribie Island’s sandy shores and estuaries an ideal location to cast your line.
Best Spots to Fish for Whiting at Bribie Island
Bribie Island offers a mix of estuaries, beaches, and creek systems that are perfect for targeting Whiting. Some popular spots include:
Pumicestone Passage: A hotspot for whiting, this passage between Bribie Island and the mainland is teeming with these fish, especially during the summer months. The shallow, sandy areas of the passage are ideal for casting.
Sylvan Beach: This quiet beach on the southern end of the island offers calm, shallow waters where Whiting are commonly found.
Woorim Beach: The ocean side of Bribie Island offers more challenging surf fishing, but Whiting are often spotted here in the shallows.
When to Fish
Summer Whiting are most active during the warmer months, from November through March. They are particularly responsive during high tide, early mornings, or late afternoons when they come closer to shore to feed. It’s also a good idea to plan your fishing trips around tidal changes, as the movement of water stirs up food that whiting love.
Gear and Bait
To increase your chances of landing a nice catch, it’s important to use the right gear and bait:
Rod and Reel: A light to medium rod with a soft tip will help you feel the subtle bites of Whiting. A reel with a 3-6kg line is generally sufficient.
